ABSTRACT
The Apostolic legation is an institution that characterized the history of relations between ecclesiastical power and political power in Sicily from the 11th century until 1871. This essay examines the origins of this institution, which date back to a privilege that Pope Urban II granted to count Roger of Hauteville in 1098, as recognition for his merits in the reconquest of the Sicily from the Muslim rule and its return to Christianity.
