Abstract
The contribution intends to examine the decretal Docta sanctorum Patrum as the most detailed normative act on the subject of music (with particular reference to the use of polyphony) ever drafted by a pope in the course of history, and a valuable source of stimulus for reflection on the subject of sacred music, which transcends the singularities of each era.
