ABSTRACT
The study aims to investigate the final events of the famous controversy related to the tribute of the Chinea, the ancient vassal service that the kings of the Two Sicilies were obliged to provide to the Papacy, feudal lord of the Kingdom, since the Middle Ages. The investigation necessarily requires an analytical reconstruction of the origins (dating back to the 11th century) and the historical development of the institution, which remained in effect until the second half of the 18th century. In light of this reconstruction, it becomes easier to focus on the final events of the controversy, which led, in 1855, to a settlement of the dispute between the Holy See and the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies, marked by modest forms and laconic content, of which an explanation is offered on the historical level and on the technical-legal level.
