ABSTRACT
In today's multiethnic and multireligious society, the tourism experience plays a pivotal role as a place/opportunity for encounters between different experiences and cultures, between different religions and as a tool for recognizing identities. By analyzing tourism in muslim society, we can identify a new segment called muslim-friendly tourism, which seems worth exploring further.
This paper will first focus on the relationship between Islam and tourism through doctrinal considerations and religious sources (the Quran); then it will examine the social and economic relevance of muslim-friendly tourism on the national and international scene and, finally, it will evaluate its ability to meet the sustainability criteria. The study will be conducted by taking into account scientific studies and data related to muslim tourism in many muslim and non-muslim countries, in order to understand its specificities, with some explicit references to Italy and its attitude toward muslim-friendly tourism.
