Proceedings of the IUS/11 Study Campus – Stilo, 18–21 May 2016 –
I am grateful to the organisers not only for inviting me to chair this first session, but also and above all for having conceived and articulated the programme of the meeting in an impeccable manner and for having chosen as its venue Stilo, home to the Catholic University, a majestic vestige of a crossroads of civilisations, religions and cultures.
As everyone knows - and as is also attested by the establishment of the famous Monastery of San Giovanni Theristis in an area that now belongs to the nearby municipality of Bivongi - in the impervious Stilaro valley, between the end of the first and the beginning of the second millennium, Byzantine monks worked, who had moved here to escape the iconoclastic fury; with their doctrine and their lifestyle, they left an indelible mark of Eastern traditions on these places and among these people, geopolitically dominated by the West, in a land such as Calabria, which, incidentally, also shows clear Semitic influences.
