The impact of artificial intelligence systems on religion is far from negligible. In addition to religious rights and traditional systems of legal and religious advice, the increasingly widespread use of algorithmic technologies raises new challenges for the protection of religious freedom, which is threatened by the proliferation of new forms of algorithmic discrimination. Alongside the implementation of anti-discrimination law derived from the European Union, the paper focuses on the impact of the regulatory instruments introduced by the Digital Services Act and the AI Act against the possible distorting and discriminatory effects generated by algorithmic systems. The anchoring to the ethical principles of responsibility and human oversight, to the development of which religious denominations have also actively contributed, has therefore resulted in the regulatory provision of a “right to explanation” of automated decisions which, together with transparency obligations, acts as a significant barrier against the risk that a person's religious identity, and in particular that of workers, could represent a factor of serious vulnerability, even in the era of artificial intelligence.
