‘Peace to this House’ (2024) is the document with which the German episcopate sought to promote a pastoral approach to peace in the current disturbing global geopolitical scenario, which reveals an incomplete transition from the Westphalian system to that of the United Nations Charter in international relations. Here we offer an interdisciplinary interpretation that draws on philosophy, law and theology, but also economics, sociology, politics and ecology, such is the complexity and breadth of the thematic horizon addressed by the German bishops' reflections. The material balance point of the exposition is the war-peace polarity, around which further interpretations unfold, including, within the framework of the criterion of consensual procedurality, a priority role played by pastoral care in its polymorphic organisational and juridical-ecclesiological extensions.
