Given the increasingly influential role of religious denominations in the changed landscape of relations between peoples, international law has not yet satisfactorily defined, from a formal point of view, the parameters within which this activity develops. The volume begins by reconstructing the terms in which the problem arose for the Holy See in the aftermath of the debellatio of the Papal States in 1870, before going on to analyse the position of religious denominations at the international level and assess their compatibility with legal categories such as subjectivity and legal order.
